Sikh man questioned at gym over kirpan

Sikh Man Asked to Leave Canadian Gym Over Kirpan Sparks Debate

A Sikh man in Windsor, Ontario, has sparked widespread discussion after posting a video showing a GoodLife Fitness employee asking him to leave the gym for wearing a kirpan, a ceremonial dagger that is a sacred article of the Sikh faith. The employee cited safety concerns after another gym member reported the kirpan.

Under Canadian law, the right of Sikhs to wear a kirpan is protected, with the Supreme Court of Canada ruling in 2006 that blanket bans violate religious freedoms guaranteed by the Charter of Rights and Freedoms. Following the incident, GoodLife clarified that its policies allow Sikh members to carry a kirpan and stated that no employee would be terminated. The company reaffirmed its commitment to inclusivity and religious accommodation.
