India’s government has appointed Harjit Singh Grewal as the new chairman of the National Commission for Minorities (NCM), ending a 15-month vacancy in the post. Grewal, a senior BJP leader from Punjab, became the second Sikh to head the commission under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government, succeeding Iqbal Singh Lalpura, whose term ended in April 2025. The NCM is responsible for safeguarding the rights and welfare of India’s recognized minority communities. The appointment restores leadership to the statutory body at a time when minority issues remain a key topic in India’s political and social landscape.
